I was dropping my baby girl to Montessori yesterday and, as I left, I saw a new notice up on the wall. I went to have a read. It was a poem. It made me smile, as so very often I have asked my kids “What did you do today?” and received the “nothing” response (that or colouring!).
The Nothing Poem
When children come home at the end of the day,
The question they’re asked as they scurry to play
Is, “Tell me, what did you do today?”
And the answer they give makes you sigh with dismay
“Nothing, I did nothing today?”
Perhaps nothing means that I observed a bird’s nest,
Or counted to ten with Mrs. West.
Maybe I painted a picture of red and blue,
Or heard a story about a mouse that flew.
Maybe today was the very first time
That my scissors followed a very straight line.
Maybe I led a song from beginning to end,
Or played with a special brand new friend.
When you’re only 5 and your heart has wings,
NOTHING can mean so many things!
